Shoot to thrill

THIS IS probably the most adrenaline-spiking activity in town so far that one can be part of inside a mall. Imagine dropping to the ground or hiding behind an obstacle, as you’re being shot with colored paintballs that leave the barrel of an assault marker, as fast as 280 feet per second.

Welcome to Paintball Cebu Urban War Zone.

As the name suggests, this here is a paintball place located at the second floor of J Centre Mall, on A.S. Fortuna St., Mandaue City.

With a playable area of over 600 square meters, this recreational center is a must-try for paintball and war games enthusiasts.

“We would like to promote paintball to the general public as a way to instill and build discipline, teamwork and self-confidence,” shared Manuel Pacaldo of Paintball Cebu. “This is more of an advocacy, to make paintball games accessible and playable, not only by a chosen few and those in the upper echelon, but also affordable by everyone else, from ages seven to 60 or even beyond, as long as they’re healthy and able to engage in this kind of activity.”

Most people are concerned—or scared—about the idea of people shooting one another.

Just like any other paintball facility, Manuel assured that safety is of prime importance.

“The safety for every participant is of paramount concern and should not be compromised. Aside from the safety gear provided, all first-time participants shall submit themselves to a safety briefing by the referees.”

“Paintball is not about hurting people and promoting violence. As we introduce it during the briefing, it is a game of putting paint on the opposing team—no-paint, no-hit.”

There are different games or “scenarios” for players to choose in a game of paintball.

There are some to choose from like Black Hawk Down: Rescue an Injured Comrade, Save the Hostage, Capture the Enemy’s Flag, Bring Home the Gold, etc.

“Every game has a mission to achieve and like basketball, there is offense and defense. Shooting is just incidental. We can always revise the format of the games, depending on the players’ preference and choice,” explained Manuel.

That doesn’t mean though that paintball is a game with zero pain. This place has this as motto: “Overcome your fear, build your confidence and discover the brave in you.”

Indeed like any other contact sport, pain is an element that cannot be totally eliminated, although measures can be taken to minimize it, such as wearing proper attire and gear.

But in the end, it’s all fun and games really. One of the reasons why this place is inside the mall (so far, this is the only existing indoor paintball facility in town) is that it has always wanted to be an accessible place for healthy sports recreation.

Imagine the thrill of going on “missions” and achieving particular objectives, while shooting the opposition with paintballs. All this can now be experienced indoors without the trouble of weather and the like.

Reservations are encouraged here at Paintball Cebu Urban War Zone. But for walk-ins, the place is open from Monday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
